As the only child ever born to humans infected by the vampires’ curse, Warrenna Dennison hasn’t fully turned, and neither have her parents. With the help of an obscure goddess and her fiery cleansings, awful blood cravings are kept at bay. But their humanity is always at risk as long as the demon rages within, and their lives are in constant danger from misguided hunters. Enter Thomas Gelbaugh, a seemingly normal teenager who sees his upcoming graduation as a frightening step toward adulthood. The only thing different about Thomas is his obsession with the vivid dreams he’s had since he was small. It doesn’t seem all that strange until he meets Warrenna, the girl who makes his cry—which is highly annoying for a young man. Her paintings stir something from deep within his dream. When he finds out she’s a vampire, he is surprisingly comfortable with the idea. Thomas can’t help getting involved in Warrenna’s life, despite her warnings. Being around her makes him sad and happy all at once. Having Thomas around makes Warrenna feel almost human. When Thomas’s closeness to Warrenna is noted by dangerous enemies, everyone’s life is at stake. If they can survive a vicious enemy’s attack, then they may find a cure to the vampires’ curse. Patrick Vaughn storms onto the glutted vampire scene with a fresh interpretation guaranteed to grab young paranormal fans by the collar. His development of Warrenna’s character reflects not only typical teen concerns, but he manages to blend it well with her unique issues. Although the character of Thomas is a bit thin at times, he is the sort of enjoyable innocent that provides a nice counter to Warrenna’s darkness. Vaughn also creates a believable atmosphere in the small desert-town setting. This will be a fun read for fans of paranormal fiction. Although aimed for the YA market, many adults will enjoy this book as well. Reviewed by Christina Wantz Fixemer
